No. PHP itself doesn't do this. There are several template engines for PHP.
Smarty is one of them.

I looked into a few of them until I realised that my problem was mixing
logic and presentation, not php. So now I write the application logic and
presentation template in separate files, but both in php. PHP to be
completely satisfactory for both.

I've always found a certain symmetry and irony in the fact that my job is
coding a spooled file reformatting tool which is written in RPG - possibly
the grandaddy of template engines?

But how would I access a PHP template engine from RPG?

I haven't looked at php on the as/400 but there must be a way surely. would
system() do ?

I don't really know what I'm talking about.

And I am not talking about a web framework. I am talking about a template
engine only. Output should be available in
- a file
- buffer (variable)
- stream (stdout f. e. )
- ...
