You could simply use SETLL to check for the existence, it doesn't
actually read a record so no structure needed.

HOWEVER, I'd recommend simply trying to do the write and monitoring
for a duplicate key error.

Otherwise, it is possible that at the time you do the SETLL the record
doesn't exist, yet when you go to write it, somebody else has already
written it.  So your program could still receive a duplicate key
error.

In addition, the SETLL technique will not detect the fact that some
other logical has a key specified as UNIQUE.
