Re: strncpy(profile, buffer, index);

Not able to do this because index is calculated thru strstr.

I changed the code to be like below:
memset(profile, 0x0, sizeof(profile));
strncpy(profile, buffer, index);
profile[sizeof(profile) - 1] = 0;

A more common use of strncpy would be

char profile[11];
char buffer[128];

Strncpy(profile, buffer, sizeof(profile));

Eg, copy data from buffer till you hit a null (\0) but do not exceed the
size of profile. You still don't have a terminating null in profile if
the size is to large, but you could fix that with:

profile[sizeof(profile) - 1] = 0;

This forces profile to always have a terminating null at the end. It
might also have one sooner, but that wont hurt anything.

So if there is no \0 in buffer before it gets to index, no \0 will be

Strcpy will copy "index" number of characters of "buffer"
to "profile"

strncpy will copy "index" number of characters of "buffer"
to "profile" AND if there is a \0 before you get to "index" it will
stop and place the \0 at the end of profile.

As I understand it, strncpy copies "index" number of characters of
"buffer"
to "profile". Since "index" is less than length of "buffer", a null
character (\0) is not appended to the "profile".
I don't think length of "profile" enters into equation at all (i.e.
you could corrupt unallocated storage if not careful with your "index"
variable).
