So basically, what you are saying, is after someone has determined all the
intricacies of what needs to be changed, they can use your product to
download it, massage it, and upload it?

If so, what I am saying is the real "think" work is determining what needs
to be changed.

Now, if someone can automatically generate a report saying this needs to
be changed on this criteria, and then outputs that to some file, then one
of these products may have some value, providing the volume is enough to
outweigh the hassles of product evaluation, negotiation, corporate
approval, installation, training, etc. And, if you overstaffed in IT to
deal with this and understaffed in data entry.

After all I was just responding to your response to clarify that the limitations you described are easily overcome.

I suppose, as the list moderator, if I approve one vendor's post for something which is only slightly tangential to the original poster's question, then it would be bad form of me to disallow another vendor offering their "me too" solution.

Rob you've just described what RPA or Robotic Process Automation
technology can do.

The term is new to describe the type of edge automation tasks you can
accomplish without changing existing app code.

Check out our Automate product to learn more
http://www.helpsystems.com/automate

You can script Excel entry, validation, reformatting and logging efforts
all into an automated task.

You can upload/download, validate, call CL and RPG programs as well as
script 5250, Web and Windows interactivity if needed.

If you want to do a little POC review send me a scenario and I'm happy to
demo some concepts as well.

If you google it, RPA is all the buzz for automating mind numbing daily
tasks and it works well.

Nice plug, but wouldn't you have to key the data into Excel?
So, I can key the data into INV500 manually, with it's interactive edit
checks, or, I can key the data into Excel without any edit checks and then
pump it up with your software and then let the edit checks happen.

I can only see this being an advantage if I had some method of an
intelligent automated process which would dump out the necessary
corrections, convert that into Excel, and then pump it up with your
software.
