Yeah, this was a long time ago. In 1981, I worked with Roger Covey, Glenn Marick and David Semmel at a company in Chicago named PCR (Professional Computer Resources). Those three people left PCR and founded SSA and wrote BPCS for the Sytem 34, then the System 38 and then the AS/400. I left in 1983 and founded Outlook Software, which wrote Outlook/38 (later BBM) and Outlook / Report Writer (later BIR). Covey later bought my company, which was integtated into SSA and its product line.

Another bit of history is that Sohaib Abbassi, the Senior Executive VP at Oracle from 1984 to 2004, the original author of SQL Forms, and now president, CEO and Chairman of Informatica in CA was a programmer at PCR, whose cubicle was right next to mine. We became good friends, and in 1983-84 I use to go over to Sohaib's apartment, we'd order pizza, and he would show me the SQL forms product that he was writing for Oracle, and I'd show him the Outlook/38 product that I was basing Outlook Software on.

Regards,  Robert Hunter

Re: [BPCS-L] AS/SET History

For you BPCS
history buffs, AS/SET was developed in 1989 and released in Jan. 1990 by
SSA
under Roger Covey, the founder and then CEO of SSA. Roger had tried to
buy
Synon
and one other company out of Australia that had a CASE tool at the time,
but to
no avail.
To
develop AS/SET, Roger approached Robert Hunter, the former owner of
Outlook
Software, a company that SSA had bought in 1987 that was the author of
BIR
(BPCS Information Retrieval), and BBM (BPCS Business Modeling). Hunter,
as
a
result of the acquisition, was at that time a product manager at SSA.
After
AS/SET was released, Hunter and the 6 programmers he assembled to write
AS/SET
became the basis for the CASE laboratory, a division of SSA that became
their
R& D facility – in Westmont, IL,  offsite
from SSA’s corporate headquarters in downtown Chicago. The CASE lab
eventually
employed almost 100 people but was disbanded when Covey left SSA around
1992-93.
Virtually no work was done on AS/SET after this, and SSA subsequently
went
bankrupt after a succession of failed CEOs.

Hey, if it works for you that's cool.  Nice discipline.  So, how do you
et AS/SET to read an entire XML file stored as a stream file in the IFS
nd put it into data structures like you can do with a single RPG op code?
.1 of RPG allows you to read the results of an SQL stored procedure.  How

id AS/SET address this?
am just saying if your only tool is a hammer then all problems appear to
e nails.
