Regarding the maintenance using shop orders, BOMs, why not use the KMR file and
set up a requirement for the periods needed to do the maintenance, and then run
your scheduling MRP600 to spread it out so your planned order fall into the
time frame needed?

Bruce,
I have seen this done successfully in version 4.05 CD.
We used "critical" workcenters that needed periodic maintenance
and we wanted visibility to those planned shut-downs.
Firm Planned orders for the dummy item# generated a Cap Load
on the workcenter for the periods we anticipated the shut-down.
A shop order may or may not be necessary depending on which reports
you use for scheduling....SFC reports and/or CAP reports.
You might consider a BOM for materials needed for the maintenance work
but that implies keeping perpetual inventory of those materials.
