I am a BPCS EDI consultant and have worked for a number of companies that are utilizing VPN technology and discontinued their dedicated (frame) lines. My experiences have been positive for the most part after initial startup problems. Problem diagnosis can be a real pain, however, because you have to deal with so many entities when there is a problem. It is imperative to have staff who fully understands all of the details (preferably a couple of techies who "know it from end to end". Another gotcha, especially for folks like me is that the various VPN clients usually "do not play well with others". I would suggest a VPN solution that supports the standard Windows VPN Networking client if security constraints permit. Another gotcha are remote clients on the other side of DSL, NAT boxes, proxy servers, etc. Some of these VPN solutions don't support such clients. Also some client sites do not support multiple tunnels so only one VPN connection is allowed at a time. I do not know how to go about evaluating ISP's, but some I have visited are being run out of environments that I would not want to place my company's communications through and any communications network (VPN or other) is only as strong as its weakest link. |--------+---------------------------> | | TLuce@xxxxxxxx | | | Sent by: | | | bpcs-l-bounces@mi| | | drange.com | | | | | | | | | 10/08/2003 11:34 | | | AM | | | Please respond to| | | "SSA's BPCS ERP | | | System" | | | | |--------+---------------------------> >-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------| | | | To: bpcs-l@xxxxxxxxxxxx | | cc: | | Subject: AS/400 Connectivity from Remote Sites | >-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------| We are evaluating going with a VPN solution rather than our current frame solution for connectivity of our remote sites. The cost is dramatically lower (thousands per month!), but the big question is reliability. We are running BPCS versions 4.05 CD, 6.02, 6.04, and 6.1.02. Three of these environments are already centralized onto one AS/400, the remaining two will be migrated within the next 6 months. Note: the sites would be throughout the US plus Toronto CAN and Monterrey MEX. Is anyone successfully using a VPN solution for remote connectivity while utilizing Client Access for green screen? What were your experiences? Has anyone tried this and failed - if so, what were the issues that caused this solution not to work? I look forward to your responses - thanks! Timothy C.
