        The Manufacturing Mode field in the Item Master designates
whether the part number is configurable.
        If you are not using the BPCS Configurator (Module CFG), just
set the value to 1, which means non-configurable. (That should be the
default). I'm sure from your question that you are not using it. Suggest
you not use the field for something else.
