Bill of Materials (and routings) can be tied to method codes. Method codes are
defined in SYS115. A method code can be defined to be used for only cost
accounting, or only manufacturing, or both. Before using a method code, you
also have to define what combination of routing and B/M methods are allowed
(SYS135).

Method codes defined as manufacturing only or both can be assigned to B/M that
can be used during schedule maintenance (MRP510) or Shop Order Release, or SO
maintenance. Method codes defined as cost accounting only can not be used in
MRP or any mfg module.

Method codes defined as a "cost only" can be assigned to B/M for cost rollups.
To do this, first you need to assign the cost only method code to a cost set
(CST 140), then run the cost rollup program over that cost set (CST600/CST500).
Method codes assigned as manufacturing only can not be assigned to cost sets,
and therefore not used for cost rollups.

It isn't as confusing as it sounds. Let me know if you have more questions. A
specific example may be easier to explain.
