Here's my 2 cents (for 6.04 - 6.1):

The ZPD file has records that are used to regenerate various BPCS documents
through the document regeneration program (ORD798). These files are
normally created, used, and record ID changed to soft deleted status
whenever a document is created through various BPCS programs. These soft
deleted records display within the document regeneration program to allow
users to reprint documents. A hard delete of those records will eliminate
them from displaying and thus being able to reprint them. That is the only
risk I know of for hard deleting those records.

The EWR file is a work file that is used during Pick Confirm (ORD570). The
only time records are left in this file is when ORD570 ends abnormally
during the pick confirmation process. While these records exist in the EWR
file the order lines they are related too will show ready for pick confirm
status but will not display in ORD570. Those records will need to be
deleted from the file to enable those order lines to be processed through
Pick Confirm. In my experience it is a rare occurrence to ever have records
in this file but if you do they will need to be deleted. I don't imagine
this one helping much on performance though.

Subject: bpcs 6.1 tuning / clearing work files

i read with fascination the posting from Peggy Heritz about clearing several
bpcs work files when the system is not being used. we have a nightly job
that clears several of these files (CLRPFM ECHW,ECLW,ZEF etc). we learned
about these the hard way when we were having conflicts within the order
entry system.

i looked at our system and we are not clearing the following files. would it
make sense to also clear these files each evening when the system is down
and nobody is on it?

ZPD
EWR
ZQWAP
ZQWRP
ZQWSP

if these are truly work files i see no harm in clearing them each evening.
does anybody have any cautions, concerns, or comments, for what it's worth
we are using version 6.04 in mixed mode. all applications are green screen
with the exception of order entry (uses the configurator) and CEA.

and finally, where or where might i find a discussion of topics such as this
within the SSA literature?

thanks
