There are a number of options.

Set up FTP service on the '400. Your programmers could then work on
automating GET and PUT functions

You could use some middleware like Datapump or Datamirror, sorry
"replication server"

You could use the copy to PC document function and drop the stuff onto a
shared folder.

You could assess other emulation packages e.g. Rumba, Bossa Nova et al
for better performance or ease of use.
