If I remember correctly, it was CPF0001 which told me nothing.  I will be
putting more ptf's on this weekend & an IPL will be required.  I will make
sure I keep the job log from that IPL & I will post what cpf message it was.

As far as ptf's go, I am current with cum, database, client access, y2k, &
any that service director has downloaded for me.

        Hmmm, that CPF message sure would be handy. A scan of IBM's AS/400
service 
        site for V4R2 returned 37 hits on a search of "daemon AND start".
All were 
        closed, so one of them obviously fixes your problem.  Any chance
that message 
        is still out there in QHST on your production box somewhere?
