Veronica, The question regarding the two file types. DIF files are an old format. I think it stands for Data Interchange Format and originated I think back in the early days of Lotus as a means of importing information into spreadsheets. The BIF format is more of a "native" Excel format. I am curious as to why files created through Query/400 do not download for you properly. They should as we do this frequently. Files created through Query/400 are, in a sense, created with DDS and should normally have field names. I am not sure what you mean here. I am also not sure why the warning is issued concerning DIF and BIF and not getting your "DATE" transferred correctly. In either case, the data will be transferred as a "number" in the format of CCYYMMDD. The spreadsheet will not be able to deal with this directly as a true "date" type field. If your file contains fields defined on the AS/400 with DDS as true "date" fields, the transfer should work fine and the spreadsheet will see a "date". This also transfers the field names from the AS400 physical file into the first record on the file - the file on the AS400 MUST have a DDS i.e. cannot be created through query etc. for the download to work properly.( This I have tested and it will download files created from query) What is interesting is that there is a difference in size between the 2 downloaded files File downloaded using type DIF 58kb BIFF5 41kb For a samll size this wouldn't make a difference but for the larger files downloaded it would. Is there any major difference between the two formats?
