Firstly you will struggle finding any PC or UNIX based system with
better reliability and availability than a '400. A 400/BPCS system
usually has off-line time for weekly IPL's, Backups, Batch jobs (e.g.
MRP explosions), admin. tasks(resets and clean-ups) and month close
programs. Not because of hardware glitches or the OS lobotomizing
itself. To get 24/7 out of PC hardware you will need a redundant server
that can be warm swapped; logging system good enough to quickly identify
the last transactions sent; and a cast iron method of detecting '400
unavailability and buffering the work.

In terms of data capture there are lots of options depending on the
application. Is this SCADA; Time and Attendance; production reporting;
labour ticket posting; inventory movements; a managed warehouse? Are we
talking hand held bar code scanners; processed signals from PLC's; or
product recognition devices?
