Dear All, Yesterday I emailed a single posting to the BBB which resulted in 6 repeated postings to all. Obviously this has caused inconvenience to many and for that I sincerely apologize, it was certainly not intended. I immediately asked our system administrators to investigate and received the reply detailed below. As you will read in the reply below, it appears the problem may have been caused by a power flux as a result of a freak electrical storm close to our Head Office in Dublin. Again I sincerely apologize for the inconvenience. Regards, Manus. ---------------------- Forwarded by Manus Bray/MS400 on 23/09/99 12:43 --------------------------- "Bernie Goldbach" <webfoto@iol.ie> on 23/09/99 12:27:33 Please respond to "Bernie Goldbach" <webfoto@iol.ie> To: Manus Bray/MS400 cc: Subject: disruption of normal mail service Hi Manus, There was a disruption in our normal mail service on Wednesday 22 Sep 99 between 1515 and 2030 GMT. The disruption occurred during and after an electrical storm in the Dublin (Ireland) area when our Notes Mail server successfully recovered from a power spike. After reviewing server logs, we determined that Domino resurrected itself. That means in-house mail services continued working because our uninterruptible power supply successfully combated the power irregularity. However, we experienced problems with mail sent out via relay.esat.net because it appears that on several occasions the handshake with relay went unverified by our downstream service provider. This meant that our Notes server attempted to retransmit the same mail several times. Our logs show this activity. When Esat's system finally recovered, duplicate mails were posted to recipients named by ms400 mail account holders. Duplicate mailings can result in extraneous postings to mailing lists. Some clients may be irritated by this practise as well. However, most parties to the duplications consider such an occurrence as glowing evidence that the Web is often a fragile thing, quite susceptible to force majure. Feel free to direct queries to the sysadmin staff, either me <gold@ms400.com> or Brian Miller <brian@ms400.com> if you need further clarification. regards Bernie Goldbach <gold@ms400.com> Notes Sysadmin Millennium Solutions 400 Ltd Millennium Group http://www.ms400.com 3010 Citywest Business Campus, Saggart, Co.
