I did it for a pharmaceutical client on their ancillary systems interfaced to BPCS, and bear is not the word for it once you throw AS/Set into the mix! Performance is no longer an issue with journaling on the newer AS/400 boxes with newer OS versions. Most of the overhead before was in the journaling, with commitment control contributing very little to the problem. Today most large shops run a high availability package, so journaling is already in place (although commitment control will automatically activate *BOTH if you're journaling only *AFTER images for HA). With so many of them using SQL now, commitment control might be easier to implement on BPCS programs than it was in the past because you don't have to modify the action diagrams for base programs to indicate that the file is open under commitment control. If all UPDATEs are done with SQL, you could just put a CL "wrapper" that did a COMMIT, call the program, if program fails ROLLBACK and if not COMMIT. The biggest problem would be subsequent calls to posting programs that don't monitor the ADK *CALLSTS value (and most BPCS programs don't) -- the program automatically appears to have finished properly. I hope that SSA eventually plans to make BPCS use commitment control so that we can enjoy the same benefits that Oracle and SAP users have had for years. Unfortunately, if the users and prospects don't demand it, SSA won't... Regards, Dean Asmussen Enterprise Systems Consulting, Inc.
