But is the reverse a smart move? My understanding of the problem is that programs that update individual records work fine with record locking, but when we have an application that updates a whole string of records, such as Billing, Shop Order Release, some MRP stuff, we do not want that job to do a chunk of the total requirements then get hung up because one of the records to be updated or built from is in the middle of being updated by something else. Dwight's scenario went beyond that to say, in effect, if engineering staff is in the midst of changing routings & BOM on some part or collection of parts, it is not a good idea to be concurrently releasing shop orders on the same collection. But the conflict problem could be perhaps be avoided by stopping MDM changes on items that are coded for being in some stage of SFC release. However, the potential problem is bigger than stopping individual conflicts. This is more a people management issue than a system design issue. The MDM changes may not be conducted in a continuous fashion for any given group of item numbers. I could envisage engineers doing BOM or Routing changes, then going off to lunch, planning to finish the job in the afternoon, & during their break the production staff tries to release shop orders on the unfinished work. The way we handle this at Central Industries is 1. A process of notification that some parts are to undergo engineering changes 2. Various departments are not supposed to be doing anything in Customer Orders or Production Control or Purchasing until the Engineers are finished implementing the MDM changes. 3. As soon as Engineering gets done, they SNDMSG to the relevant people that item # such & such has been finished by them & is now available for normal orders. > Subj: RE: Method of locking items from SFC during MDM changes > From: asingh@kode.net (Ashok Singh) > > Hi Dwight: > Please ignore my last message, It will not prevent the Shop order Creation. > > Ashok > > -----Original Message----- > Ashok Singh > > Hi Dwight: > It is a very simple change in the material/routing maintenance program.
