If you have access to WebSmart PHP, use it to help you get into PHP. It is
not really PHP, more of a framework to build a limited set of PHP
applications that can access your IBM i data. The learning curve is their
language, but it is not too bad if you just mostly use the application
generation concept.

Once you have learned that, you will start to be exposed to more and more
PHP, and that will help you get a grasp on how it all fits together. At
that point, you can level up to Zend Studio and become more familiar with
PHP and all its functionality.

Don't forget to learn more than just PHP. HTML is the UI for PHP
applications, and you should know the basics at least. Eventually, you
will want to understand user experience and graphical user interfaces. One
of the best sites for learning modern tools is sitepoint.com - both their
books and their courses.
