Yes, but you misunderstood me anyway.

You have a binary blob called a tar-file which you need to unpack. This is done with a executable named tar. There are two executables on the AS/400, and you and I have been using the wrong one. You need one that understands code pages, and I've been told that there is a tar executable lurking in the /OpenSys file system which DO. It is not the blobs placement, but the executables placement I'm talking about.

Personally I ended up doing as Pete, use winzip over the network.
