The "path=" statement is an instruction to the browser. When the browser requests a URL it uses some logic to determine whether to return a cookie to the server, or not. A URL contains a path. The "path=/" statement overrides the default path and tells the browser to send the cookie to any URL requested on the domain. It makes the cookie global for the domain, rather than limited to any specific path.
