Walden, I agree.  As part of a "design pattern", the ability to assign
alternating colors to rows is very important.  It's not always preferable,
but in many cases it is.

The other is to be able to assign shading to COLUMNS, preferably in groups.
For example, you may have an account description followed by three columns
of this year statistics, three columns of last year statistics.  An
additional shading for the three this year columns (including the headings)
lends a very "webby" feel.

One of my clients uses this to great effect on an old 5250 subfile.  By
using clever shading techniques and a nice font, the revitalized HTML looks
like it was designed for the web, even though there's an old-fashioned
green-screen subfile program behind it.
