It is defined as a numeric field, not a text field. The "problem" is that
the minus or plus sign appear to get stripped out immediately - the exfmt is
performed and the next operation in debug shows the value without the plus
or minus. All other character values do cause an error (input inhibited),
so the user is forced to reenter the weight.

A EDTCDE(4)
A DSPATR(PC)

I'm trying Alan's suggestion of a different edit code now.

Can you modify the data entry program and make the field a numeric field
instead of a text field? Then only numbers will be accepted...or validate
that only numbers exist in the text field, if a character is in there then
throw and error and make them rekey it... if you don't have access to the
data entry program how are you supposed to know what to do with the dashes
and pluses? You can remove them but the data is still wrong because you
have no idea what the user intended. Garbage in garbage out.
