(whispering) Psst... that's why you use a VPN. So you can give them addresses from your LAN, even when they're behind NAT or traveling.

Though, SSL client certificates, or SSH keys will also work as an alternative to IP addresses.

We stopped trying to verify by IP Address (for external clients). The problem we were running into was multifold.
One: NAT or Network Address Translation. This alone delayed most implementations by days.
Two: Customer insistence on being mobile. If they wanted to ftp a drawing up at 4:30 am from their home, motel room, airport far be it from us to deny them.
