Note that a VPN allows access to your entire network only if that's the way
you configure it.

You should be able to set up users & groups on the VPN end point with
different levels of security and access to different resources.

VPN seems to open up much more of our network. It's one thing to use our
ftp site because the firewall only allows certain ports, they can only
connect to certain addresses, etc. But once they can ftp they can get to
anything an internal user can. I use VPN from home and love it.

(whispering) Psst... that's why you use a VPN. So you can give them
addresses from your LAN, even when they're behind NAT or traveling.

Though, SSL client certificates, or SSH keys will also work as an
alternative to IP addresses.

Chamara,
Are you trying to do this with external or internal clients?

We stopped trying to verify by IP Address (for external clients). The
problem we were running into was multifold.
One: NAT or Network Address Translation. This alone delayed most
implementations by days.
Two: Customer insistence on being mobile. If they wanted to ftp a
drawing up at 4:30 am from their home, motel room, airport far be it
from
us to deny them.
