I figured you would be one to answer that inquiry Simon :-)

I had a miserable time finding the doc to describe _why_ that was the result. Although it was easy for me to see _what_ the code was doing, I just could not find the docs to describe _why_ it works that way. I searched InfoCenter for nested lists, element and offset, and other stuff. Nothing I found described the scenario. Lots of other stuff that did not describe the result; doc about simple lists and mixed lists:
http://publib.boulder.ibm.com/infocenter/systems/scope/i5os/topic/rbam6/rbam6vallsts.htm
http://publib.boulder.ibm.com/infocenter/systems/scope/i5os/topic/cl/elem.htm

So given your response, today I searched on the three tokens "complex list command", by typing those in the Search bar at the InfoCenter, and there it was. Finally! The link:

http://publib.boulder.ibm.com/infocenter/systems/scope/i5os/topic/rbam6/defdlclhll.htm

Not only did they use the word displacement instead of offset, it was possibly even moot to search that, because it was an /image/ instead of text. I hate that! Someone told me I should drill into the programming manuals when I know the language and the task... That sure would have been the way to look this time, since the above link is under sub-heading "Defining lists within lists".

Regards, Chuck
