public final class com.microsoft.sqlserver.jdbc.SQLServerDriver
extends java.lang.Object implements java.sql.Driver{

This tells you that this classname (which is the same one from your
RPG code) implements java.sql.Driver -- meaning that it's truly
a JDBC driver that you can use.

Anyway, if all of these steps work successfully... then you must still
be doing something wrong with your CLASSPATH setting. If these steps
do not work successfully, please tell me what happens, and maybe I'll
be able to offer additional advice.

Thanks again Scott,

I did what you suggested and indeed I saw that information included in
the class description. While digging down to that level, I noticed that
the rights on that file were rw-rw-rw-. I'm not sure if it needs
execute authority to function because I'm new to the Java runtime
environment on the System I (or whatever it's called).

I thought it might be the version of Java but I ran "java *version" and
it is running at 1.4.2. I also tried multiple variations of the
classpath but let me detail the proceess I'm using to do that to make
sure I'm not making any mistakes or leaving anything out.

1)Log into a fresh green screen. I assume this clears the previous JVM
for that user job.

2)I run - ADDENVVAR ENVVAR(CLASSPATH)
VALUE('/QIBM/UserData/MSSQL/sqljdbc.jar') - That is where the file
resides that I just interrogated as you suggested. I've also tried
"VALUE('.:'..." as suggested in some places.

3)I add to my library list.

4)I run my RPG program that attempts to use that class.

Then I get the error. It seems like class paths are the bane of my
programming existence. Thanks again for all the help. Let me know if
you can think of anything.
