Doh!  That seems to be what I was missing.  Thanks again for the helpful
hint!

On a side note, am I the only one who gets confused when defining packed or
binary fields?  Remembering the rules about how many bytes it will really be
once packed is not actually hard, but it is not very intuitive either.
