counter to hex, I think you can create a data structure that has a two
byte numeric field as the first sub field (my head exploded several
hours ago so I'm not going to look up that part) and then another sub
field for the character part. You should be able to pass the data
structure to whatever needs it at that point in the proper format.

Doh! That seems to be what I was missing. Thanks again for the helpful hint!

On a side note, am I the only one who gets confused when defining packed or binary fields? Remembering the rules about how many bytes it will really be once packed is not actually hard, but it is not very intuitive either.
