In an earlier post, you said that ordinary mixed data like
   This is a string <double byte stuff here>

Is that still true that the simple case above gets written fine, but you
have problems when you have to convert { } etc?  If it is just after you
need conversion, maybe your string variable is too short and you're
losing some data from the end of the string, including the ending shift
character (just a wild guess).
