I'd move your Web Service question over to the 
http://lists.midrange.com/mailman/listinfo/web400
list.  Perhaps they might be of better assistance.

Just a little 'nettiquette to help you get the information you want:
- Watch your subject line.  Anything with Digest in it is meaningless.
- Don't start a new thread by replying to another.  Screws up the 
archives.  Create a whole new memo and either paste the To: address in 
there or put the RPG list in your personal address book.
- Don't start a new thread late in the body of a reply.  Especially if the 
reply is a humourous one on April Fools day.  They tend to get ignored.

In response to your question, I decided to fiddle with the alarm() and
sigaction() APIs, and I've got them working.  I used this technique as
an easy way to make the connect() API time out for an article that will
be published in my newsletter tomorrow.

you want to look at it as a sample for how to use sigaction():

thanks for these sources.
using alarm() seems easier than using select() for timeouts.
i tried, but didn't get into the select() stuff.
you should include this in you sockets tutorial.
