into an RPG program, you could use the SQL LOCATE function...

Example:

select * from F4101TFR
where
       locate('&', I$$U02) <> 0
   or locate('%', I$$U02) <> 0
   or locate('''', I$$U02) <> 0
   or locate('|' , i$$U02) <> 0
   or locate('?' , i$$u02) <> 0
   or locate('"' , i$$U02) <> 0
   or locate('<' , i$$U02) <> 0
   or locate('>' , i$$U02) <> 0
