I would:
Declare the string in a DS.
Overlay the same position in the DS with an array (Array1) of 1 character
elements.

For Idx = 1 to %size(string);
        If      Array1(Idx) = '%' or
                Array1(Idx) = '&' or
                etc...
                        
        EndIf;
