The person who wrote is presumably familiar with the translation from
character to numeric values that occurs when moving character data to a
numeric field.  The only reason I can think of would be if NUM was
manipulated between the MOVE and IF statements and could not be any value
other than 123 if it had been changed. 

Certainly a rather odd way to check for a change in my opinion.
