Starting with V5R2, use %CHAR() to convert numerics to character, and %INT() or
%DEC() or %FLOAT() or their half-adjust cousins for converting character to
numerics.

Prior to V5R2 there are other methods; I just wrote my own service program
routines at V3R2 which I still use today (but I'm on V5R1 now).
