You realize I am not a sophisticated top line programmer but from my point
of view I like RPGIV because: date and time math is incredibly fool proof
and easy, because there are nice built-in functions like %Found, %EOF,
%Error, %EditC, %EditW, because field lengths can exceed 256 characters,
because I can name subroutines "WriteRecordSR" or "GetDetailSR", and
because indicators 01 through 99 are just not needed anymore(except for
DDS). There are other reasons but those are the ones that leap to the
fore.

So far as the ILE part... well that is still a dark mystery to me.

Brad mentioned code reuse, but the biggest benefit for me far and away was
improved readability. I can use truly meaningful variable names instead
of
6 character ABRVTS (abbreviations).

Other benefits (for an old RPG II programmer):
1) Fewer limitations (larger arrays, character strings, etc.)
2) Local storage via subprocedures
