Just curious here ...

Instead of a data area why not use a single record "master" file.  It
would seem to me that record locking is at least as efficient as data
area locking and let the system take care of updating disk as needed. 
Even if you journaled the file the potential to busy out a disk are
would be less.  

400 updates to this file should be no harder than for the system to add
400 invoices to the invoice file.

What are the downsides ?
