I will admit that it seems like a daunting problem for the normal environment on an AS400, however there may be very compelling reasons for what may seem ridiculous to you.

I have a customer who needed the complete status and quickly changing future requirements of their JIT inventory faxed to all appropriate vendors every night. The header of the fax required that the total number of pages be known and that each page had its number of the total showing. This was an absolute requirement so that any existence of any missing page could easily be seen. (Hmmm. How could the existence of something missing be "seen" )

I solved the issue simply by automatically downloading the data nightly into an Access Data based, had an Access program run once for each vendor, overrode the print output to a Winfax  driver and used the nice, simple NUMBER OF PAGES function in the Access report software. Each time the program restarted, the page count and total number of pages was unique to each recipient.
