Again... the BEST is to listen to Security Now (http://www.twit.tv/sn). If
you are really concerned, there are services that will encrypt your
connection. I don't recall any sites off the top of my head.

My Thinkpad supports WPA but the wife's Dell doesn't. I'm aware of it and

Yes - vpn is ok if I'm on the road and the site I connect to offers
SSL/VPN type stuff.

But my initial question stems from a friend who asked about this while on
the road in a motor home.

He wants to frequent web sites that do not utilize any mechanism of
securing connections, but do require a user id/password. He was more
concerned about logging into, say a site like yahoo, (without the secure
login option), and then wondering if anyone could steal his login
credentials, and snoop on his pc for other sites that he may frequent,
which may use the same user id and password.

My response was to use different passwords, especially for 'sensitive' web
connections such as work/banking/retirement etc...
