Per Tom's suggestion on getting wireless encryption running:  I set up

128-bit WEP, but it looks like I should be using WPA instead, according to
a
few articles I just pulled up.  Advice on that?

Definately use WPA if all your client devices support it.  If they don't,
see if there is a firmware upgrade that adds it, or consider adding a
different WPA enabled adapter to the devices using a USB dongle or
whatever.  "Wired Equivalent Privacy" (WEP) is not exactly equivalent to
wired privacy.  Weaknesses in it were exploited long ago, though it is
certainly better than running wide open.

You keep out the casual person looking for an unsecured network, but not
those with enough intent.
