They leak all the time if not properly getting recharged. One of the reasons cache batteries really need to be changed and not just reset. They eventually will swell and start leaking. Then the planer board goes and real trouble ensues.

I have. I have 35mm cameras that run on the venerable #76 silver cells. And I've seen them leak.

I would imagine that it's probably less likely with lithium cells, since metallic lithium is only slightly less likely to catch fire than metallic sodium or metallic potassium.
