Is this still a problem... and if so is it "always" or "sometimes"...?

If always
- check that port 9100 is still the port assigned in the printer control
panel

because windows can use other ports (and so can power i but it needs to
match.
- change the Printer error message to *INFO instead of *INQ - this will (i
think ) help when connection is unstable and you get a message but no need
for (C R) answer - have seen this in some ibm docs

if sometimes
- if during larger spooled files - then have needed to increase the timers
in the printer itself - that the buffer has not finished printing but timer
expires to get more from system - some printers 30, 60, 90 second timers
yet buffer may hold enough to print for many minutes

- is the printer definition indicate sharing under user defined options
