There is.

When you're receiving or sending flat files (with a single data format in
each file) and you want to access the data through externally-defined
files. This could be non-X12 EDI, interfaces to 3rd party applications, or
files from a System/36 (I feel unclean right now).

An edge case is when you're unable to use transparency when sending FTP.
