Date/time/timestamp have worked that way "forever."    I think we've had them in DDS since V3R1, but I could be misremembering... it was too long ago!   At any rate, I don't think anyone today will have trouble with the ability to use them.

What do you find cumbersome in RPG?   I have always found date/time/timestamps very easy to use.

They were there with V4R5 at least, but handling them programmatically is somewhat cumbersome in (ILE) RPG. The "internal" format for them in RPG is different than what's derived through external descriptions from PF/DSPF.
