This is a good point. If it weren't for certain apps that require Java Web
Start, we wouldn't be using it either, e.g. certain vendor Out-of-Band
Management applications.

On a side note for Jim, if you use the MSI for Semeru 8, Iced-Tea is bundled
in it. (Just make sure to select those components during the install).

There's also https://openwebstart.com/, but I haven't given it much
attention (yet).

Rob,

I agree with the don't' use download (mis)director wholeheartedly, I've
always hated that software. Your source at IBM and I have had that
discussion before too. That said, there are places where we need to
download stuff (LPPs come to mind) using the Java tools, since IBM simply
won't allow any form of FTP to those files in ESS (and a couple of other
places).

So the choice is HTTPS and select each file etc, or use the Java client and
get the group of files easily and faster.

So the solution seems to be a piece of software called Icetea-web. It has
the functionality of javaws (Java Web Start) but uses a slightly different
command for it. Still a pain because we have to save the JNLP file then
run it with this command to get it to work.

I had a great guy from IBM on the case I opened with iACS. Anyone would

Basically he said this is his opinion and not IBM's but do not use
Download Director. This is where the .jnlp file came from. He says to
avoid DD like the plague.
He also had a tactful way of saying I'm an early adopter and probably
never saw the memo where I should be using the install program provided
with iACS instead of just copying the files into a desired directory.
(Although some propeller heads may prefer that way.)
The install program is in the Windows Application folder.

I've found that Edge outright blocks .jnlp files. Newer versions of Java
aren't rather fond of them.

How do I associate jnlp files with the JRE I downloaded from
https://developer.ibm.com/languages/java/semeru-runtimes/

Should I have used the JDK instead?
