No I didn't either but I did hear of people doing that.
Many years ago, I wrote a DOS application in M$ QuickBASIC, that had
pull-down menus rendered in text semigraphics (because hardware text
screens render much quicker than bitmaps), on an 8MHz 8086 (a Tandy
1000SL). And for the benefit of those not running it on faster hardware,
I designed it so that those pull-down menus were rendered from the top
down, but *removed from the bottom up.*
I also designed it in such a way that calculations and rendering were
interleaved, to hide any long delays.
