Linux, Window, etc, all have a GUI (in the case of Linux X11) that run ON
TOP OF the OS.

If you accept that definition, then IBM i has a GUI just the same as the
others. That said, with the exception of Navigator for I, (which is really
a web interface) it's not as developed as the others.

Nice intellectual discussion but using the GUI as a measure of the POWER
server as compared to other servers is a lot like buying a car because it
has a really cool dashboard, but no engine worth a salt. It's the engine
and the cost to run it I care about. Don't care about the GUI since I
rarely use it anyway.

Completely fair point, and very apt. It doesn't make a whole lot of sense to
talk about GUIs in the Mac or Windows PC sense when we're talking about a
system designed as a server.

And to bring this back to the message that started this thread: I can't
imagine any sense in which IBM i *is* a GUI. (Note that OP didn't even
mention whether IBM i *has* a GUI.) I think calling IBM i a GUI would be
confusing and unhelpful. The question presupposes that the audience has
heard of Unix. It would be better to call IBM i a mainframe-flavored
alternative to Unix.
