Evan,

Thanks. I do have a twinax controller (plus Steely Dan's greatest hits),
and I do (S/34 programmer that I am) have twinax cables (I store them in my
attic).

I sis forget to mention (senility is setting in) that once upon a time in
the west (re: Sergio Leone) that when this system was first delivered it was
configured for an HMC, even though ordered as twinax (we converted later).
The IBM tech (level one) had the steps (I think) memorized. I.e., I had to
go through steps on the control panel to switch it to twinax.

So, I'll accept an alternative. What are those mysterious steps (he would
not slow down so that I could write them down)?

Hi Jerry

let's say you go ahead and change that second option to "1" (Twinax) - are
there any twinax cables connected to the system ?
Do you even have a twinax controller in the 520 ? (I am betting the answer
to this is "No") I don't think the twinax bit of this plan is ever going to
work...

I think you will be forced to reconfigure the LAN Console to work at the new
site, but I would need more information to make any suggestions on that
score.

I have a system, which is currently using a LAN console, to a twinax
console. I know, I prefer a LAN console, too. In short, this is for
a company that is no longer in operation, but they have to have access
to the data for another year. I have to move the System i (a 520 at
V5R4) from its current "home" to another location. Once I get it
moved, I may re-configured the LAN console (or I may just rest on my
laurels).

Anyway, I think I know how to do this, but I need confirmation that my
thought is correct and complete. I think the only thing I need to do
is run STRSST and change the second option on this panel to '1'. It
will probably
ask me (or force me) to re-IPL. Anyway, is this the extent of what I
have
to do?

Select Console

System:

Allow console recovery and console can be taken

over by another console . . . . . . . . . 1 1=Yes, 2=No

Select one of the following:

Console type . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 3

1. Twinaxial

2. Operations console(Direct)

3. Operations console(LAN)

4. Hardware management console(HMC)

Current state of console tag . . . . . . . . 0

Allow supported internal LAN adapter to

be the console . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 1 1=Yes, 2=No

Allow supported Gigabit LAN adapter to

be the console . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 1 1=Yes, 2=No
