RE: DCR request - order any PTF not part of any cum or group

As an exercise, read through some of the cover letters for PTFs not in a cum or in a group.
I just did V7R1, 2/17 back to 9/16.
Many of the issues and problems fixed are very valid.
All sorts, mostly MF and SI, performance related.

I probably download 50 to 100 PTFs.

The reason I do this, too many times in the past when calling IBM with an issue, turns out there was a PTF that resolved the issue, but PTF never made to a group or cum.
And too many times another IPL would be needed, to apply this single PTF.

Well you know, think about what you just said for more than 1 second and think about the original question

I generally have a look at the cume instructions but if it's planned maintenence and everything is going on delayed from the standard groups and the target machine is relatively up to date I pretty much do exactly what you do and leave it at that.

However if it is a special PTF I tend to look at it a bit more closely and read the cover letter. Admittedly this is a bit of a CYA move but because it is outside the groups and cume I think it's worth paying attention. PTFs of this type would usually be as the result if a call ir maybe from a hardware call home.

So if I was considering putting on every individual PTF not in a group or the cume with no catch all cover letter I can rely on I would find myself in something if a dilemma.

Surely ordering *everything* just consumes time at the other end of
the process when you need to review all the cover letters of the PTFs
you don't need.

What PTF's - and how many - are you seeing that are genuinely
important and critical ?

Do they make it onto the next cume ?

It probably never will.

And, there are some reasons why not.
1 - Some PTF's control the way things work. Remember when WRKACTJOB
was changed to default to Activation Group but if you ordered a ptf
it
changed
the default behavior back to previous methods? Consider these
toggle switch PTF's.
2 - FUD. IBM came out with a PTF to fix an issue that only Rob
reported.
No one else has experienced this. Maybe Rob does something really
unique.
Yes, IBM did good regression testing, etc. However they are loathe
to shotgun it to everyone unless
A) It is highly risky to NOT have it.
B) Numerous people requested it and it didn't kill them.

Many years ago, I had a DCR request for a possible new PTF order.
SF99712 - any PTF not part of any cum or group.
It never materialized.

Any thoughts from the group?
