Well yeah that's a clear cop-out for sure. Thanks IBM.

Nonetheless you can cable it and configure it and use it. However knowing the vulnerability of the thing it should be in a location in your network that is accessible only to a very limited number of persons or devices anyway. Sorta like the access to ASMI on your Power System.

I would love to talk to the IBMer that says the IMM is unsupported and shouldn't be used!! He's clearly never run a data center (face palm.) I have sent inquiries as to why this recommendation exists.

There is a dedicated Ethernet port for the IMM. It's usually identified with a black ring around it vs white for the others. It does need it's own IP address yes and can be in any network. As private as possible perhaps only available via VPN. If you are IN the datacenter you can leave finger prints on the Power button and use the Mark I eyeball to observe lights and system status. :-)

Access to the IMM is done via web interface primarily.

Larry,

HMC was off, due to heat.
Powered up manually, no issues so far.

Do you have a current link for IMM setup and config?
I found this old link- 2010.
http://www.ibm.com/support/knowledgecenter/STAV45/com.ibm.sonas.doc/imm_users_guide_60y1465.pdf

I'm a bit confused, found this doc on a Google search, stating not to configure it. Integrated Management Module v2 is affected by vulnerabilities in OpenSSL (CVE-2014-0160 and CVE-2014-0076)"
IBM will not be providing a fix for IMM2 on the HMC because it is an unsupported function. HMC users should not have the IMM2 port configured or cabled for network access.
https://www-304.ibm.com/support/docview.wss?uid=nas8N1020037

I'm currently using ETH0 (to Power7 private IP rannge) and EHT1 (to switch public IP)
Does the IMM take a 2nd fixed IP and utilize either ETH2 or ETH3?

Likely. We see the HMCs go down much sooner than Power7 or Power8 machines. The small 1" fans simply cannot move enough air when the room gets toasty.

Do take a few minutes and configure up the IMM though. Can be your ticket to staying in your pink fuzzy bunny slippers and restarting things from home. :-)

Larry,

Honestly, I'm not sure if IMM is wired and/or configured.
Only ever used the HMC web access.
Currently I can't ping the HMC, so think it did shut down, due to high temp.

Will know more in the morning.

Paul

First thing I would do is access the IMM that is built into the HMC hardware. From there you can see the HMC temps, see if it's running or idle, start it up or shut it down etc.

Of course you DID cable that, give it a fixed IP address, and create a
logon to the IMM, RIGHT? :-)

I think it may have shut down, due to high temperature.
Data Center was over 100, temp coming back down.
Any other ways to remotely check HMC.

Thank You
