Steve, I understand all that. That was why I asked what is the objection to using a DNS?

Establishing a sizable network and trying to manage it all by manually reconfiguring IP addresses is pretty much early 1990s technique. There may well be a reasonable reason for choosing to use IP addresses but I can not imagine what it is, if for no other reason that using IP addresses causes exactly the kinds of confusing error-prone solutions that the Original Poster is trying to deal with.

Thats why I put that suggestion out there - maybe he is asking the wrong question? Maybe not. But he should at least look at a DNS solution before winding down a path that leads to a briar patch.

IMHO it seems that Chuck was trying to inform that your response to
Troy's question was unresponsive.

Regardless of whether the printer devices on Troy's system were defined
with host names or IP addresses, it appears that the QDCRDEVD API can
return either the host name /or/ the IP address for the device, but this
information is irrelevant for the current topic.

In other words, whether DNS is being used is NOT a relevant response to
Troy's question. Perhaps your response should have been in a new thread
with a topic "Host Names vs IP addresses for IBM i printer devices"...
